What could be more fun than discovering a country by driving from town to town.
Some points that can be useful for everything responsible driver:
Take dated photos of the vehicle from all angles before starting the adventure.
Avoid driving at night because the roads can be surprising (unsignaled speed bumps, potholes, vehicles without headlights, or vehicles with too many headlights…) and it would be a shame not to take advantage of the great Mexican landscapes.
No need for an international driving license
Warning number 1:
At the insurance level. To drive a vehicle in Mexico you need MEXICAN liability insurance. Insurance taken out with travel sites and credit or debit card insurance are not acceptable forms of coverage.
Warning number 2:
The deposit for your rental car is 99% made with a CREDIT bank card (also called DEFERRED DEBIT). In France 99% of bank cards are DEBIT cards (it's even written on them). The difference is:
Immediate debit cards display the mention debit
Deferred debit cards display the mention credit
We can always try to negotiate at the counter so that they accept the DEBIT card for their deposit but I think the best thing is to make a CREDIT card with your bank before leaving.
You will find testimonials from people who have managed to rent without paying more or without paying for a particular package and good for them.
Generally it is the rental agent who tells you OK but will block a substantial sum as a deposit and you must take the most expensive insurance…
You might as well not take any risks and anticipate headaches and complicated negotiations after hours of flying.
